A big tree is a lot of weight over your roof

A mature oak or eucalyptus can weigh several tons, and most of that weight sits up high, spread across limbs that reach over roofs, driveways and the neighbor's fence. On a calm day you never think about it.

Then a winter storm rolls in off the Pacific. The ground is soaked, the wind picks up, and a limb that looked fine in August comes down on a gutter or a car. In Marin that's an every-winter story, not a rare one.

Most of it is preventable. A tree that gets looked at and trimmed every few years almost never surprises anyone. The ones that cause trouble are usually the ones nobody has checked since they bought the house.

What We Do

Tree Removal

When a tree is dead, leaning toward the house or simply in the wrong spot, we take it down in sections and haul everything away. Tight Marin lots are normal for us.

Tree Trimming and Pruning

Thinning, raising and shaping that keeps a tree healthy and keeps limbs off your roof. Good pruning makes a tree safer in wind without butchering it.

Tree Trimming →
Fallen pine limb across a front lawn and driveway after a winter storm, the house undamaged

Emergency and Storm Tree Service

A limb on the roof or a tree across the driveway can't wait for a weekday. Call us and we'll get it cleared and the damage made safe.

Storm Service →

Hazard Tree Assessment

Not sure if that big oak is a problem? We look at the trunk, roots, limbs and lean, then tell you straight what needs to happen and what doesn't.

Defensible Space Clearing

Limbing up, spacing and clearing around the house so your property meets Marin's 100-foot defensible space rules before fire season.

Local to Every Corner of Marin

We work all over Marin, from the wide lots of Novato to the steep, wooded streets of Mill Valley and San Anselmo. Each part of the county has its own tree problems. Redwoods and bay laurels crowd the canyons in Mill Valley and Fairfax. Old oaks shade the flats in San Rafael and Kentfield. Wind off the bay works on the eucalyptus and pines in Tiburon and Sausalito. Wherever you are, we've likely worked on trees just like yours.

Common Questions

It depends on the tree's height, trunk size, how close it is to the house and whether a crew can get equipment into the yard. A small ornamental tree in an open yard is a short job. A tall eucalyptus over a roof on a Mill Valley hillside takes a full crew and a long day. That's why we look at the tree in person and give you one written price that includes cleanup and haul-away.

Sometimes. Most Marin towns protect large or native trees, and the rules change from town to town. In Novato, for example, a heritage tree is one with a trunk 24 inches across or more, and it needs a city permit before it comes down. Dead trees are usually treated differently. We'll tell you if your tree likely needs a permit before we schedule anything.

For most trees here, late fall through winter is the best window. Many trees are dormant, it's easier to see the branch structure, and trimming before the big storms takes weight off limbs that would otherwise catch the wind. Some trees, like oaks, are best pruned in the dry months. We'll tell you the right timing for the trees on your lot.

Often, yes. Warning signs include a new lean, cracks in the trunk, mushrooms at the base, dead limbs high in the crown, and soil heaving up on one side. None of those means a tree will fall tomorrow, but each one is worth a look. A hazard assessment tells you what you're dealing with before the next storm.

Yes. Cleanup is part of every job, not an extra. We haul away limbs and wood, rake the area and blow off driveways and walkways. If you'd like to keep some of the wood for firewood, tell us and we'll cut it to length and stack it.
